Book One

The First Wound

The first novel in a five-book science-fantasy series exploring survival, stewardship, colonial ambition, and what happens when connection becomes a source of power.

The elemental, antlered Eldruhn
Civilization I

The Eldruhn

An antlered people whose lives are bound to six elemental sources: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Lightning, and Life.

Their antlers are permanent expressions of identity and power. Touch carries intimacy or threat; losing them severs more than bone. Families, herds, and cities are built around cooperation with the living world rather than dominion over it.

The many-minded ocean civilization of the Ceralis
Civilization II

The Ceralis

A many-minded ocean civilization shaped by pulse, memory, pressure, and current.

Each Ceralis carries intelligence through a central mantle and specialized limb-minds. Their society includes brood queens, workers, warriors, scouts, and memory-writers—castes connected through biology, shared history, and the movement of water.

Human corporate infrastructure and expansion
Civilization III

The Humans

A corporate colony that arrives through control, industry, and expansion—without understanding the civilizations already living there.

After a five-hundred-year journey, the colonists inherit a mission shaped by executives preserved in orbit. Their technology can suppress living sources, harvest antlers, and turn sacred biological power into a commercial resource.

Stewardship in practice

For H. M. Higgins, sustainability is not background decoration. It is a daily practice—and the foundation beneath his fiction.

3+ tonsof local organic material diverted from the waste stream and returned to living soil.

Through PNW Worm Farming, Brandon collected spent coffee grounds from area coffee stands along with fruit peels and juice pulp from a local juice company at the Vancouver Farmers Market. Instead of sending those materials to a landfill, he composted them and used red wiggler worms to transform them into nutrient-rich vermicast for gardens and soil.

Build local loopsOne business's discarded grounds, peels, and pulp can become another garden's fertility.
Work with living systemsWorms, microbes, plants, water, and people each do part of the work when the system is designed to cooperate.
Leave something betterRegenerative choices should build resilience now while protecting opportunity for the generations that follow.

Behind the worlds

H. M. Higgins

H. M. Higgins writes science fantasy rooted in ecology, accountability, and the difficult choices civilizations make when survival and power collide.

Based in the Pacific Northwest, he draws inspiration from regenerative agriculture, living systems, and the belief that stewardship is not passive—it is a responsibility to the generations that come next.

The future is not inherited. It is shaped by what we protect, what we exploit, and what we choose to leave alive.

The H. M. initials honor his grandfather, Harmon Melvin, and a family name carried forward across five generations.
